A prominent son of Ukwa land, Mr. ThankGod Ntaku, has stated that the government of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Abia State has continued to undermine his people in spite of the enormous contributions of the area to the economic well being of the state.
In a statement made available to the press, Mr. Ntaku decried the recent move by the state government to relocate the cattle market that has existed for several years at Ogborhill, Aba, to Obehie in Ukwa West local government area, Abia State, stressing that if proper consultations were made, the government would have realised that such a business would thrive more in places with high population density than at a place like Obehie with low population.
He said it was unfortunate that the government had continued with its sinister plans of dispossessing Ukwa people of their land using bogus projects, adding that this particular project had exposed the real intentions of the government to plant a Rural Grazing area (RUGA) in Ukwa land.

He described the decision of the government as very unpopular, having the capacity to tarnish the little image it has in Ukwa, and called on it to rescind the decision to relocate the cattle market at Ogborhill to Obehie.
According to him, “it is not long now that the state government brazenly, without taking into cognizance the welfare of Ukwa people, relocated the High Court at Obehie to Aba, citing the deplorable conditions of the Port Harcourt / Enugu Federal highway (between Ariaria junction and Uratta) at Aba, as reason.
“The government did not consider the fact that both Ukwa East and Ukwa West use this same Court, which is very far for many villages in Ukwa East, which ordinarily deserves its own High Court, and went ahead and relocated it to Aba”.
Ntaku, who is a Communications expert, said it was worrisome that a place from where much of the resources being used in the running of the State come from could not be considered for viable projects, instead, the people are constantly reminded that the government does not care about their interests, adding that the long disregard for the people of Ukwa had become worse in the administration of Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu.
Continuing, he said, “if the PDP government had single regard for Ukwa people, it would have allowed the Abia State Oil Producing Development Commission, ASOPADEC, free hands to utilise substantial amount of the thirteen percent derivation allocated to it monthly, to develop Ukwa land”.
Ntaku called on all well-meaning people of Ukwa to see these humiliations of the PDP government as an eye-opener to the fact that the government can never protect the interests of Ukwa people, pointing out those Ukwa sons who were inactive connivance with the government to deny Ukwa the benefits of being an oil-producing area would later discover that they were only willing tools in the hands of people who assaulted the sensibilities of Ukwa people without any restraint whatsoever.
