The Chief Medical Director Ohafia General Hospital, Dr. Okocha Sunday has begged members of Abia state House of Assembly to grant approval for the expansion of the hospital’s morgue.
Conducting members of Abia state House of Assembly Committee on Health round the facility on Friday during a visit to ascertain the state of the hospital, Dr. Sunday said the morgue which has over 100 corpses at the moment has exceeded its limit.
He also decried lack of water, electricity, poor security, and lack of perimeter fencing as well as dilapidated buildings around the hospital.
The visit of the lawmakers follows the resolution of the state House of Assembly after a motion of urgent public importance on “The Need To Refurbish The Ohafia General Hospital, In-Line With State Government’s Efforts to Spread Access to Quality Care Delivery” moved by the Deputy Speaker/Member Representing Ohafia South Constituency.
The committee chaired by the member representing Ikwuano State Constituency, Hon. Stanley Nwabuisi, Other committee members in the delegation were Hon. Chijioke Chukwu, Deputy Minority Leader and Member Representing Bende North; Hon. Mike Ukoha, Minority Whip and member representing Arochukwu, Hon. Jerry Uzosike, Member, Representing Umuahia South, also had the Abia State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Osuji in their company as they took a tour of the facility.
Speaking while hosting the team at his residence, the Deputy Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Uchendu thanked the committee and the commissioner for their fact-finding visit to the hospital.

He argued that apart from the morgue at the hospital, there is no other meaningful health-related issue been treated at the hospital due to some of the challenges pinpointed above by the residence Doctor which has made it very difficult for people to take their sick ones to the hospital for proper medical attention.
He pleaded with the committee and the commissioner to speed up actions towards revitalizing the hospital for better service delivery to the people of Ohafia while praying for their safe trip back to Umuahia.
In his response, the Chairman of the committee, Hon. Stanley Nwabuisi promised that his committee would make all the necessary recommendations to the house that will guide her in her further legislative actions on the subject matter and appreciated the Deputy Speaker on behalf of his committee for his warm reception.
The Director Of Medical Services (Hospital Magt. Board), Dr. Mrs. Ekwuekwu, Mrs. Ochia Juliet (Chief Matron of the Hospital), and other management staff of the hospital were present during the visit.
