Following weighty corruption allegations against the suspended acting chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, the Senate has mulled a bill to bar police officers from head EFCC and other anti-graft agencies.
A prominent senator from the north revealed to THE NIGERIA DAILY that the government is embarrassed by the level of allegations against the acting Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which led to his suspension by President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday.
To curtail the use of force in the economic and financial crimes fight, both the ruling and opposition parties of All Progressives Congress (APC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have jointly agreed to propose a bill that would prevent police officers from heading any anti-corruption agency in Nigeria.
The two bills, one drafted by APC senators and the other, PDP senators share some common ground: both call for reform on the appointment of the chairman of anti-corruption agencies, professional investigations on allegations before raids, more training for law enforcement officials and incentives for law enforcement officers to wear body cameras. The bills would also make media trial a crime.

The source also added that the Senate wants anti-corruption agencies headed by reputable individuals from the judiciary and private sectors. It added that aside from its headship, police officers are allowed to work as members of the organization.
