Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu has said his Government would no longer condone the acts of setting up a bonfire on the streets of Aba or other places in the State, warning those involved in such indiscipline and wickedness against the environment to desist forthwith or be ready to face the attendant collateral consequences.
The Governor gave the warning in a crucial meeting with the acting Chairmen and Management of Aba North and Aba South Local Government Areas and the Chairmen and members of Management Committee of Ariara International Market and Ngwa Road Market (Ahia Ohuru) held at Eziama, the Aba North Local Government headquarters.
He said such an act of setting bonfire was capable of damaging the roads constructed by the State Government.
Represented by the Chief Of Staff, Dr Anthony Agbazuere, Ikpeazu, who frowned at the high level of indiscipline being exhibited by Aba residents and traders, stressed the need for them to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse along major streets and drainages as such was an offence against the law.
He further enjoined the traders to keep and maintain a healthy environment by sweeping and keeping their business premises clean to enable business activities to thrive better.
Dr Ikpeazu informed that a task force team would soon be set up to monitor and enforce total compliance on all Government directives regarding environmental cleanliness in the State.
In their speeches, the acting Chairman Aba North, Mrs Joy Iwuchukwu and that of Aba South, Mr Fred Ogwo assured the Governor that his directives would be carried to the latter.
According to them, there is going to be an improvement in the environmental cleanliness of both the markets and Aba community generally as they called on traders in all the markets in Aba to cooperate with them to ensure that Government’s directives are adhered to.
Responding on behalf of the traders in Aba markets, the Chairmen of Ariaria International Market and Ngwa Road market, Mr Chigozie Okeke and Chijindu Ojogho promised to redouble their efforts in ensuring that the environmental conditions of their markets are greatly improved.
DAILY POST reports the Governor’s representative later visited the Ariaria International Market and Ngwa Road Market (Ahia Ohuru) where he addressed the traders on the need to ensure environmental cleanliness in their markets.
